Defence Minister Mihai Fifor said on Thursday, in Parliament, that “today the payment for the first Patriot missile system has been completed.”
“These systems are among the few tested in the battle, which is very important for the military,” said Mihai Fifor at the MoD’s budget hearings.
The letter of offer and acceptance for the acquisition of Patriot Missile Systems was signed on November 29.
The Patriot systems will endow the Romanian Army’s Land and Air Force in the second half of 2019, the first system is to be operational by mid-2020.
The law by which the Army will acquire seven Patriot ground to air missile systems with equipment was promulgated on November 27 by President Klaus Iohannis.
In November, the Chamber of Deputies adopted by 279 votes in favour, one vote against, and one abstention, the draft law to acquire seven Patriot ground-to-air missile systems with the required equipment.
The Mihai Tudose Government approved the draft law on November 8, the contract value is USD 3.9 billion, VAT free.
The first system will be bought by the end of this year, with the US acceptance letter already received, the value of which is USD 764,780,000, VAT free.
