Gov’t issues negative opinion on the legislative initiative on the status of the Royal House

The Government has issued a negative opinion on Wednesday on the legislative initiative regarding the legal status of the Royal House.

Prime Minister Mihai Tudose said at the end of December that the Executive will give a negative opinion to the draft law on the legal status of the Royal House. He also said that Elisabeta Palace in Bucharest was given to King Michael as former head of state, not to his descendants, realitatea.net reports.

“All the respect for King Michael, for what he represented in history, for what he accomplished. He was head of state. But to give rights to the successors of a former head of state… Forgive me, but there are also other former heads of state who have successors. (…) We are not a monarchy, Romania, constitutionally, is a republic, and we have acknowledged the merits for the former head of state, King Michael. Now, should we admit that there is a crown here … Forgive me, but I do not believe I have a legal basis. The Royal House is a foundation, and they want it to become a foundation of national interest. I agree with this. The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Romania is a foundation too, also an NGO of national interest,” Tudose said on December 29 for Romania TV private broadcaster.

The draft bill on the legal status of the Royal House was submitted to Parliament by Senate Speaker, Calin Popescu-Tariceanu and by the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Liviu Dragnea, on November 7, 2017.
