How much have the foreign tourists spent in Romania last year?

In 2016,  almost 2.5 million foreign tourists came to Romania (2.469.9 thousand)  and their expenditure mounted to RON 5.9 billion, spending on average RON 2397.9/person, the National Institute of Statistics informed on Friday. In Quarter IV 2016, the total number of non‐residents in collective tourist accommodation was 540.800 and their expenditure amounted per total RON 1305.6 million.

In Quarter IV 2016, the main reason of foreign tourists’ stay in Romania was: business, attend congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (61.3% of the total number of non‐resident tourists), their expenditure being 62.8% of the total expenditure.

The second reason of the non‐resident tourists’ stay in Romania was the travels for particular purpose (38.7% of the total number of non‐resident tourists), with the holiday travel prevailing (61.8%). The travels for particular purpose include travels for holidays, shopping, sports and cultural events, visit friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

In terms of business expenditure, most went for the accommodation (51.4%), the accommodation with breakfast included being particularly preferred (90.8%).

The expenditure of foreign tourists in restaurants and bars was 18.2% and that for shopping 10.3%. Of the total expenditure for shopping, 39.7% represented the expenses for purchasing presents and souvenirs, followed by expenses for purchasing food and beverages 35.0%.

The expenses on car rentals were 57.6% of the total expenditure for transport, while the expenditure for purchasing tickets for amusement parks, fairs, casinos, slots halls represented 58.1% of the total expenditure for recreation.

Most foreign tourists ( 52.4% ) arrived in Romania by travel agencies and 30.4% had organized their stay by themselves.

The main means of transportation used by the non‐resident tourists arriving in Romania was the plane (79.2% of the total number of tourists). 14.4% of the total number of tourists used their own cars, followed by coaches and buses used by 4.9% and 1.5% used other means of transportation (train, riverboats, car rentals, motorcycles etc.).

In 2016, the main reason of the non‐resident tourists’ stay in Romania was business, to attend congresses, conferences, courses, fairs and exhibitions (57.6% of the total number of non‐resident tourists), their expenditure being 58.5% of the total expenditure.

The second reason of the non‐resident tourists’ stay in Romania was the travels for particular purpose (42.4% of the total number of non‐resident tourists), out of which the holiday travel being highlighted (61.4%). The travels for particular purpose include travels for holidays, shopping, sports and cultural events, visit friends and relatives, medical treatment, religion, transit and other activities.

Of the total business expenditure, the greatest weight is represented by the accommodation expenditure (52.7%), the accommodation with breakfast included being particularly preferred (92.3%).

The expenditure of non‐resident tourists in restaurants and bars was 17.0% and that for shopping 11.7%. Of the total expenditure for shopping, 37.6% represented the expenses for purchasing food and beverages, followed by expenses for purchasing presents and souvenirs 35.6%. The expenses with car rentals had a weight of 55.1% of the total expenditure for transport, while the expenditure for purchasing tickets for amusement parks, fairs, casinos, slots halls represented 54.0 % of the total expenditure for recreation.

Out of the total non‐resident tourists arrived in Romania, 51.7% had their stay organised by travel agencies and 30.5% had organized their stay by themselves.

The main means of transportation used by the non‐resident tourists arriving in Romania was the plane (74.9% of the total number of tourists). 14.3% of the total number of tourists used their own cars, followed by coaches and buses used by 9.1% and 1.7% used other means of transportation (train, riverboats, car rentals, motorcycles etc.).
