The president of the Senate’s legal committee, senator Serban Nicolae on Wednesday stated that the referendum proposed by president Klaus Iohannis might take place on the same day with the referendum to revise the Constitution if the President agrees and waits for the citizenship initiative to be passed by the Parliament.
“The referendum related to the Constitution revision will be summoned mandatorily. It’s no matter of option, the Parliament cannot afford breaking this constitutional provision after the initiative on amending the Constitution is adopted by the two chambers of the Parliament,” Serban Nicolae said.
He argued that the Constitution says the referendum is held 30 days after the Parliament Oks it.
Serban Nicolae says the referendum on Constitution revision might take place at the end of April.
Asked what would be the costs if both referendums were held on the same day, Nicolae said “there would be an insignificant plus”.
“There would probably be an insignificant plus, as there will be two different consultations, on two different topics and two ballot papers are needed. There is also the possibility that a citizen could opt if takes part in a referendum or another one,” Serban Nicolae argued.
