President Iohannis visits Mihail Kogalniceanu military base

President Klaus Iohannis is visiting the “Mihail Kogalniceanu” military base in Constanta County, on Thursday, and he had meeting with NATO Military Committee (CMC) Chairman, General Petr Pavel. The President also met Romanian and British pilots ensuring the Strengthened Air Police mission at the base’s administrative center.

The Romanian President was welcomed with military honors upon arriving.

Iohannis stated he was impressed by the “Mihail Kogalniceanu” Air Base, stressing that Romanians should be proud of it. “As a general message, I can say that we can be glad and proud to have this base at Kogalniceanu,” he pointed out.

As for the meeting with general Petr Pavel, the President said: “We discussed many things, most of them related to the Black Sea region, the Eastern Flank, and I wanted to find out from General Pavel how the military perceive the whole complex. We also talked about money, more precisely, Mr. General wanted to say that he greatly appreciates Romania’s move to allot 2 percent of the GDP for Defence.”

Iohannis stated that he had talks with the Government about the army endowment programme, saying he has received promises the programmes would kick off soon.

It’s a matter that I have also discussed with the former Government and with the current Government, as well. They have all promised me they would do all it’s necessary to kick off acquisitions in due time. I am waiting for this to happen,” the Romanian president said at Mihail Kogalniceanu base.

He pointed out that the Defense Ministry will have to inform how the Army’s money will be allotted through the state budget.

At the end of the visit, he attended a flight exercise with MIG 21 Lancer, F-16 and Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft.

The NATO Military Committee Chairman, General Petr Pavel, is paying an official visit to Romania, from Thursday to Saturday, at the invitation of Chief of General Staff, General Nicolae Ciuca.

On Saturday, President Iohannis will go to Cincu shooting range within the “Saber Guardian 2017″ multinational military exercise.
