Romanian Roma actress, nominated for The League of Professional Theatre Women award

Romanian Roma actress Mihaela Drăgan has bee nominated for the prize granted by The League of Professional Theatre Women to be awarded in New York on October 23.

The Gilder/Coigney International Theatre Award is a prize awarded by The League of Professional Theatre, with Mihaela Drăgan being among the 20 nominated actresses this year.

The award is celebrating the exceptional theatre work of the female artists around the world.

Mihaela Drăgan, born in 1986, is actress and playwright, based in Bucharest and Berlin. She founded “Giuvlipen” theatre company in 2014, along with other Roma actresses, “a revolutionary theatre” as described by Reuters, with a feminist agenda. For instance, “Gadjo Dildo” show talks about the hyper sexualization of the Roma women by the Roma men.

In 2015 Drăgan starred in “Aferim!” directed by Radu Jude, a film awarded the Silver Bear for direction at the Berlin International Film Festival. She played the leading role in “Magie Noire” short film directed by Fanny Ardant this year.

She studied acting and collaborated over the years with Logos Theatre and Theatre for Few in projects that focused on expressionism, eurythmics and acrobatics

Her last theatre show, The Journey/Drom is co- produced by GORKI Theater Studio Я, Berlin (2016).
