Romanian table tennis player Bernadette Szocs has won the ITTF Europe Top-16 Cup tournament on Sunday in Montreux (Switzerland), a contest between the best 16 table tennis athletes on the continent.
Szocs has defeated in the final the Dutch tennis player Jie Li 4-1 (12-10, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7).
In Montreux, Bernie Szocs has lost only one set, defeating Tatiana Bilenko (Ukraine) in the first round 4-0, Georgina Pota (Hungary) 4-0 and Matilda Ekholm in the semi-finals (Sweden) 4-0.
The third place was won by Romanian tennis player Elizabeta Samara, who has defeated Ekholm a 4-2 (11-4, 8-11, 11-6, 11-9, 4-11, 11-8) in the match for positions 3-4.
The competition was firstly organized in 1971 and, among the winners is the Romanian table tennis players Olga Nemes (1983), Emilia Ciosu (1993) and Otilia Badescu (1995). Romania has 4 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 7 bronze medals. Nemes won the gold in 1989, but for Germany.
The prizes amount to EUR 30,500 for both men’s and women’s tournaments. The winners will collect EUR 6,000, the finalists – EUR 4,000, 3rd place winners – EUR 2,500, 4th place – EUR 2,000, etc.
This success comes for the Romanian women’s table tennis team after the gold medal won by the Romanian team at the European Championships last year, a team consisting of Elizabeta Samara, Daniela Dodean-Monteiro and Bernadette Szocs.
