The doubles pair made up by Romanian tennis player Horia Tecău and the Dutch player Jean Ulien Rojer have won on Friday the US Open 2017 doubles final 6-4, 6-3 against Marc and Feliciano Lopez (Spain).
Tecău and Rojer will receive a cheque worth USD 675,000 and 2,000 ATP points.
“The key to the whole thing is you need to communicate and be out there and fight together,” said Rojer in the on-court ceremony. “These are pressure-packed situations. That’s a strength of ours. We’ve had a great two weeks. We played well in all the matches and we did so again today, atpworldtour.com informs.
“Congratulations to Marc and Feliciano; they are very good friends of ours. They had a great week and they were very deserving. It came down to a few points and it was a very close match,” added the Dutchman, who also took the opportunity to send a message to his family on the Caribbean island of Curacao, who had been unable to travel to New York to watch the final due to Hurricane Irma.
Rojer and Tecau won their first major trophy together at Wimbledon two years ago, and would finish that season as the No. 1 duo in the Emirates ATP Doubles Team Rankings, closing the year as the champions at the Nitto ATP Finals in London.
“It’s been a tough set to hold serve for me,” said Tecau. “I was grinding to hold serve [in the second set]. They had a lot of chances and I was fighting hard to hold. We were just focussing on trying to get one more point, don’t focus on the title and see what happens.”
For Tecău, the final was a fifth that he played in a Great Slam tournament, his only title being won at Wimbledon in 2015. To reach the final, the Romanian and his partner defeated on Thursday the first seeded paid made up by Henri Kontinen (Finland)/John Peers (Australia), 1-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.
For the Romanian-Dutch pair, the duel against the two Iberians was the third of the career and the second season. The two pair met first in 2016 in Dubai, when Marc and Feliciano won 6-4, 6-4 and the revenge came in the Rotterdam Hall this year when Horia and his partner have won with the same score.
Both Tecau and Rojer have played the US Open final for the first time, with their previous best result in New York in the quarter-finals: Tecau (2011, 2015), Rojer (2013, 2015). The two players shared one Grand Slam title, the one they won in Wimbledon, in 2015.
