The first leadership program designed for school principals launched in Romania

The first leadership program in Romania designed for school principals was launched on Tuesday during the International Conference for Leadership and School Management: the Leadership and School Management Academy. The program was developed by the Association for Values in Education and has a budget of EUR 300,000, raised from 30 local companies who contributed to it.

The Association for Values in Education came up with an unique program in Romania designed for school principals, and the requests to join the program came immediately. We are glad that we managed to bring together 200 school principals from all over the country, all of them interested in how they can help improve their students’ performances. It is a promising start, and we estimate really good results,” said Andreea Nistor, Executive Director of the Association for Values in Education.

The International Conference for Leadership and School Management was led by international specialists, such as Allan Andersen, from Denmark, a school principal with more than 20 years of experience, recognized for creating innovative learning environments, Michael Chapman, with over 27 years of experience in school management from UK, and Steven Edwards, a former White House consultant, with extraordinary results in innovation and in improving the students’ results in USA, Nigeria, Kenya, Oman, India, UK, Germany and Denmark.

Over the years, working in the educational field, both in the US and abroad, I observed that the most important role in schools is that of the principal. Students need a motivating learning environment, and the school principal is the one who can make it real. Through the Leadership and School Management Academy, principals will have the opportunity to learn to take leadership roles and also to take responsibility for their school’s results“, said Steven Edwards.

The Leadership and School Management Academy is based on a customized process focusing on developing leadership skills for a group of 30 school principals across the country. They will benefit from 530 hours of training with international specialists in education and 720 hours of mentoring, 1 to 1, delivered by approximatively 40 professionals. This program will run for 12 months and it will impact 12,000 students. The goal is to reduce the school drop-out rate, the functional illiteracy rate, to improve the schools’ results, and also to improve the Bachelor and PISA tests results.

The training, coaching, and mentoring sessions will be complemented by visits in schools and in schools’ communities to identify together, the principals and the specialists, the most appropriate context-based approach.

The school principals will be rigorously selected by a team of HR executives on the basis of their previous interest in developing projects and initiating action within their schools and according to their leadership abilities.

Eligible for this program are high school, technical school, vocational school, general and gymnasium school principals and also the kindergarten principals.

The program is developed in Romania by the Association for Values in Education, in partnership with Edwards Educational Services, and its value rises to approximately 300,000 euros. More than 30 companies are involved in the project. Lidl, the main sponsor of the Leadership and School Management Academy, contributed already with EUR 100,000.

Similar leadership programs have already been implemented by Edwards Educational Services in the US, Nigeria, Kenya, Oman, India, UK, Germany and Denmark. Programs in these countries have succeeded in reducing the school drop-out rate and functional illiteracy rate by up to 50% in three years.

The Association for Values in Education supports and coordinates the involvement of private companies from Romania in improving the educational system. AVE members are businessmen, entrepreneurs and professionals in education who facilitate the involvement of the Romanian private companies and civil society in initiatives with transformational impact on the educational system.

Edwards Educational Services, Inc. is a consulting company. Its members are school principals from all over the world. Educational leaders from Edwards Educational Services, along with governments and education ministries that are contracting them, help with the transformation of the educational systems in order to optimize students’ results.
