The oldest hotel in Arad, hosting concerts by Franz Liszt or Johann Strauss son in the past, sold

Ardealul Hotel in Arad, western Romania, where Franz Liszt and Johann Strauss son performed in the past, has been sold this month, for about EUR 1 million.

The oldest hotel in the city, Ardealul has been put up for sale by its owners several times in the past years, but it was only this month that it was sold for EUR 1 M.

However, the new owner hasn’t bought the entire building, but only the entrance in the hotel on the ground floor and two floors of the unit. The rest of the commercial premises on the ground floor have not been sold.

Ardealul Hotel, formerly known as “White Cross Grand Hotel” and considered a historical monument, was built by Franz Mahler in 1841 on the venue of an 18th-century inn.

The hotel has accommodated outstanding local cultural personalities and artists over the years, such as Romanian writers George Coşbuc, I.L.Caragiale, Octavian Goga, composer George Enescu, or Jules Massenet, Francois Copee, Andy Endre and Arany Janos.

The festivities hall of the hotel also hosted concerts performed by famous musicians such as (1846), Johann Strauss son (1847), Johannes Bramms (1879) or Pablo Cassalis (1912).

Ardealul Hotel has been refurbished in 1974 and has an accommodation capacity of 250 seats.
