Former Prime Minister Victor Ponta has received on Thursday the Serbian citizenship, media in Belgrade report.
According to ‘Blic’ newspaper, Ponta is one of the Romanian lawmakers who supports Serbia to join the European Union. He is also a long-time friend of the Serb President Aleksandr Vucic. The paper recalls that in his speech delivered to the Parliament in Belgrade, Victor Ponta said Serbia is Romania’s best friend.
“I am honorary adviser to President Vucic since 2016 and I support the partnership between Serbia and Romania and Serbia’s accession to the EU. I was awarded this honorary and honourable position, as other persons have,” Ponta said.
Ziare.com reminds that Sebastian Ghita, a friend of Victor Ponta, has found refuge in the neighbouring country since April last year, when he was remanded in Belgrade.
Former deputy Sebastian Ghiţă, arrested in Serbia after being caught presenting false documents, was released by the Serbian authorities from prison in May 2017 after paying a bail of EUR 200,000.
He is under judicial control and is not allowed to leave Belgrade. He is to come to the police offices twice a month. His passport was seized by police.
After fleeing, two short-term arrest warrants have been issued by the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ – Supreme Court) and by the Ploiesti Court of Appeal on Ghita’s name.
The former deputy is currently in Serbia, where the Romanian authorities are trying to have him extradited.
