Romanians boast a sad record, being the most avid alcohol drinkers in the European Union, after Lithuanians and equal to the Czechs, as the latest statistics by the World Health Organization reveal.
The WHO study says that every Romanian has drunk the equivalent of 13.7 liters of pure alcohol per year, or the equivalent of 685 beer mugs.
Romanians are followed by Bulgarians and Croatians. The alcohol consumption is down in certain western European countries.
The WHO also warns over the link between alcohol and cancer, the organization revealing that Romania ranks sixth in the European Union on cancer cases caused by alcohol consumption.
