71 localities in 15 counties affected by floods. Code RED in two counties, code yellow in half of the country

The Interior Ministry (MAI) has announced Wednesday morning that 71 localities in 15 counties are affected by floods (Argeş, Braşov, Buzău, Călăraşi, Covasna, Dolj, Dâmboviţa, Giurgiu, Harghita, Ilfov, Mureş, Prahova, Olt, Teleorman, Vaslui) and Bucharest.

“In Homorod, Brasov County, 6 people have been preventively evacuated from their flooded houses, but they have returned after the danger has gone. Nationwide, 53 houses, 85 household annexes, 639 fountains, 5 bridges, 34 cellars, one national road and five county roads have been affected,” the same source informs.

Wednesday morning, according to Infotrafic, floods affected traffic on the following roads: DN10 Siriu – Sita Buzăului, in Covasna and Buzău counties. Traffic is deviated on DN10 Siriu-Cislău – DJ102 Cislău – Vălenii de Munte – DN1A Vălenii de Munte – Braşov.

More than 3,000 fire-fighters and 2,000 equipments are at the affected sites.

According to Mures County Emergency Situation Inspectorate (ISU) spokesman, Major Cristian Virag, in Gurghiu locality some 20 households have been flooded, 40 small bridges, 700 of county road and tens of hectares of agricultural land.

Code RED for floods in two counties, code yellow in half of the country

The water cachment areas of Homorodul Mic and Homorodul Mare rivers in Harghita and Brasov counties are under CODE RED for floods as of Tuesday.

Hydrologists had initially issued a code orange alert for floods on the rivers in three counties, Harghita, Covasna and Brasov,  (mainly on the tributary rivers of Olt, with higher intensity on Cormos, Homorodul Mic and Homorodul Mare) valid as of this afternoon through Wednesday, March 14, 10 a.m. A yellow code warning is also in force for the rivers in 24 counties in southern, north-eastern and central Romania.

However, the situation has got worse and experts had to declare an extreme emergency situation and institute a code red warning.

Overall, there were 85 courtyards and households flooded in three localities from Harghita county after the rivers have flooded following heavy rainfalls, mlting snow and the water flooding from the mountains’ slopes. A county road and a bridge have been affected, while two men have been saved by the firefighters after they had got stuck in their car in Lazarea locality in Harghita following an almost one-meter flood.

A code yellow alert was in force Tuesday on some rivers in Harghita, Bistriţa-Năsăud, Mureş, Sibiu, Alba, Mehedinţi, Dolj and Olt counties, and also in Teleorman, Argeş, Dâmboviţa, Giurgiu, Prahova, Covasna, Braşov, Buzău, Suceava, Neamţ, Bacău, Vrancea, Botoşani, Iaşi, Vaslui and Galaţi.

Rainfalls will prevail in the eastern, southern and central regions until Wednesday morning.

Other damages

A county road in Arges, near a police station, was blocked after a pond had flooded. Fire-fighters intervened in nine localities affected by floods.

Tens of households and houses in nine localities in Arges have been flooded due to torrential rains on Tuesday.
