Arctic plant in Gaesti closed after 66 employees had tested positive for COVID-19. Tens of Sri Lankan employees of clothing factory in Focsani also infected

Arctic plant in Gaesti, the biggest local manufacturer of home appliances, part of the Turkish Arcelik Group, has announced the closure of the factory after 66 of its employees had tested positive for COVID-19.

“With about 4,000 employees, Arctic company is prioritizing the health and safety of its team, of its business partners and customers. 66 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at the factory in Gaesti, following a testing procedure initiated by the company after the first conformed case on May 7. Therefore, Arctic decided to close the plant immediately”, says a company press release.

The group also says that all those who tested positive have no symptoms and are hospitalized, under the close supervision of the local medical authorities.

The coolers assembly lines will resume production on June 2, while the fridges lines will start producing again on May 25.

Meanwhile, the plant will enter a disinfection programme, while all employees of Gaesti plant will enter technical unemployment for the entire period when the factory is closed. However, the difference up to the full net salary will be covered by Arctic.

The employees who made contact with the infected people are currently in self-isolation at home.

Turkish Arcelik Group, owner of Arctic Gaesti, announced in 2016 that it intends to build a factory of washing machines in Romania.

50 Sri Lankan workers at clothing factory in Focsani, infected

Around 50 Sri Lankan employees working in a clothing factory in Focsani have tested positive for the nivel coronavirus, with a part of them being hospitalised or quarantined in special centre, Vrancea local health authorities announced.

Last week, 129 workers from Sri Lanka were tested for COVID-19, with 84 testing negative and 43 positive. Two were hospitalised at the county emergency hospital, 19 people are under quarantine in a centre in Galaciuc, while 22 are being consulted in the infectious disease ward.
