BMW Partners with NTT Data to Open IT Development Center in Cluj-Napoca

BMW and NTT Data announced in a press release that their partnership for the investment in Cluj aims “to support BMW Group IT in Europe and to develop IT projects and innovations for production, development, human resources, sales, and BMW financial services.”

The company will start with 120 employees, and by the end of this year, it aims to have 250 software developers, with the number of employees in Romania expected to “grow to several thousand” by 2027.

Although no proposed investment amount has been disclosed, BMW states that it chose Cluj-Napoca due to the city’s growth, including its status as an educational center, reports.

BMW’s IT division has 9,400 employees in IT and software hubs in Germany, the USA, South Africa, India, Portugal, and China. Since 2019, the Bavarian company has been constructing a fully digitalized plant in Debrecen, Hungary, where it plans to produce a number of electric models starting from 2025. Romania was also reportedly considered for this investment, but Hungary was ultimately chosen. Cluj-Napoca and Debrecen are only 220 kilometers apart.
