EU grants EUR 17 M to Romania for improving access to drinking water

 

EUR 17 million of the Cohesion Fund will be invested in four infrastructure projects on water distribution and management, a press release informs. It’s about projects to be carried out in Gorj, Ialomita, Ilfov și Suceava.

“Ensuring access to quality drinking water is a concrete example of European solidarity, which will bring benefits to a large number of Romanians. With new cohesion policy investments, citizens in Romania and across Europe will have access to clean water, meaning both the protection of their health and of the environment,” European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Corina Cretu stated.

Out of the total of EUR 17 million approved, EUR 2.5 million will help complete the rehabilitation and extension of the water management and distribution infrastructure in 19 communes in Constanta and Ialomita counties, meaning an increase by 24,000 in the number of inhabitants which will benefit from the improvement works.

Also, EUR 7 million will go to the urban agglomerations in Gorj county, including Targu-Jiu, and EUR 2.8 million will be used to complete the renovation and expansion of the water distribution and sewerage in eight urban areas in Ilfov county, near Bucharest.

At the same time, EUR 5 million will be invested in the northern Romania, in Suceava county, in the extension of the water management and treatment system, the number of inhabitants having access to clean water will increase by 7,766 people at the end of the works.
