Expropriations Approved to Complete Răstolița Hydropower Plant

The Ministry of Energy announces the adoption in the government meeting of the Decision on the completion of Annex No. 2 to Government Decision No. 900/2017, which allows updating the list of privately owned buildings necessary for the implementation of the public utility work of national interest “Răstolița Hydropower Development”, the Ministry of Energy says in a press release.
“One of the priorities of the Ministry of Energy is the completion of hydropower plants started before 1989. Blocked for decades by the lawsuits of environmental organizations, carelessness or incompetence, these projects mean Romania’s chance to have safer, cheaper and cleaner energy. The Romanian state has already invested billions of lei in these objectives and, no matter how many interests I disturb, I will not stop until we complete them. I am confident that this year we will mark a premiere and inaugurate the first completed hydropower plant after over 34 years: Răstolița. Today, in the government meeting, the government decision for the expropriation corridor was approved. It is another step, after obtaining a new environmental agreement last year”, said in a statement the Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja.
“Next comes the removal of forest land for the area in the reservoir basin (GD initiated by the Ministry of Environment), then the completion of the last works (the stage is approaching 100%) and the filling of the lake. Then, START production! I was on the Răstolița construction site at the end of last year and I can confirm that the works are on schedule. If everything goes well, by autumn we will have a new hydroelectric power plant in Romania, of 30MW, a flexible group, which will help us a lot, especially for covering consumption peaks”, the minister also said.
The Răstolița Hydropower Development, located in the northeast of Mureș County, is part of the category of works of national interest for the creation, development and production of electricity.
The works on the hydroelectric power plant are over 90% complete, with the value of investments made to date amounting to more than 200 million euros. If completed and put into operation, the facility will have an installed capacity of 35.2 MW and an average production of 46.3 GWh/year, in a first phase, which will increase to 117.5 GWh/year in the final stage.
