IMF’s Tolosa: “Romania must ask the Fund to negotiate a new deal and then to discuss the options

First, Romania has to ask the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to negotiate a new agreement, if desired, and then it will analyze the type of agreement which can be concluded, Guillermo Tolosa, the Washington-based Fund’s resident representative said on Thursday in a press conference.

He stated that such a request has not yet been received by the international financial institution.

Regarding the IMF’s delegation presence to Bucharest in October, Tolosa said that there will not be an assessment mission, but a technical one on the 2016 budget.

Referring to Prime Minister Victor Ponta statements on the fact that the Romanian Government has paid the debt to IMF, Tolosa pointed out in his turn: “Romania has two categories of debts to the IMF. A part must be paid by the government and the other, by the central bank. The government has fully paid the debt but BNR still has to pay three installments, the last will be paid in January.”

However, Romania has to repay EUR 4.88 billion to international financial institutions by 2023, according to data provided by the Ministry of Public Finance (MFP).
