The naval plates produced in Galati Steel Plant are used for an important cruise vessel to explore the North seas.
„We are extremely proud to be part of building “Le Comandant Charcot” ship. We have tailored special technical and commercial solutions for this prestigious project, which is the proof of our capability to deliver for new and difficult challenges. This ship will not be only a cruise vessel, but also a benchmark in terms of observing environmental issues”, said Bogdan Grecu, Chief Executive Officer of ArcelorMittal Galati Steel Plant.
The construction of the polar exploration vessel, named “Le Commandant Charcot”, has officially started with the traditional steel cutting ceremony, on November 6th. The ship will be built at Tulcea VARD Shipyard, part of Fincantieri Group.
”Le Comandant Charcot” will be operated by PONANT, starting 2021. As per the owner, the vessel will be a new type of cruise ship to explore the North Pole area as a cruise ship, but also as a scientific laboratory for operational and research missions on oceanographic research. It will be the first exploration vessel to surpass the ecological standards set out in international regulations. An electric hybrid vessel, it will be powered by Liquefied Natural Gas .
„The vessel will bear the name of a great French explorer Le Commandant Charcot. An explorer by vocation with a true passion for sailing, Jean-Baptiste Charcot is one of the emblematic figures of French polar expeditions”, PONANT explained.
