Gov’t to consider introducing a flat tax for hotel operators

Romanian tourism employers proposed the introduction of a specific tourism tax, per room or accommodation place, with a limit of up to EUR 5 million in turnover.

“We will analyze this option. (…) This decision would reduce the bureaucracy, would increase the degree of tax compliance and collecting by default, would make it easier to pay taxes and it would be fewer controls,” Prime Minister Victor Ponta said on Friday in a press conference in Mamaia resort, hotnews.ro informs.

He explained that the measure could come into force after passing through Parliament after a legislative initiative.

In turn, Finance Minister Eugen Teodorovici, explained that in September a draft law for introduction a single tourism tax will be finalized and will be submitted to Parliament. It will be a flat tax per room and is to be adopted and applied in early January 2016.

In Parliament there is a draft law on the introduction of a flat tax for companies in the tourism, catering or auto services, but was rejected.

On the other hand, Mohammad Murad, President of Romanian Tourism Owners Federation (FPTR), said during the same conference that the hoteliers will pay an annual tax which could reach about EUR 100 per room.
