Changes expected in the supermarket networks

XXL Mega Discount is looking for a buyer, sources have told ‘Ziarul Financiar’. The supermarket network is to be put up for sale by Rewe, the German owners who have sold the Selgros Cash and Carry operations and Billa supermarket network on the domestic market.

Now on offer reportedly are all eight XXL MegaDiscount supermarkets in Romania. The stores are quite large, with an average area of 2,500 square meters and a range of over 7,000 products sold at very low prices. But their location may be the strength for sale. XXL Mega Discount is present in the capital and also in cities such as Brasov, Sibiu, Galati and Braila.

For these supermarkets negotiations have already begun. Among those interested reportedly are Auchan and Carrefour, but also Mega Image, for which the acquisition would mean a step beyond Bucharest, where they have focused so far.

But the supermarkets would also fit Auchan’s portfolio, which has already made public its plan to enter the smaller segment area.

If it sells the XXL Mega Discount stores, Rewe will own locally only the Penny Market network. But there are 175 stores under this brand in the country and Rewe says he wants to extend them.
