Energy Ministry becomes civil party in Rompetrol file to recover any damage

The Ministry of Energy has become a civil party in Rompetrol file to recover any damage that the court might highlight by the end of the investigation, said on Thursday Minister Victor Grigorescu.

“Currently, the Ministry does not ask for anything. We are at the beginning of an investigation concerning potential large scale damage in a complex file. We reserve the right to be civil party at the beginning of an investigation and, if there is something to be recovered we would be able to do it,” Grigorescu explained.

Asked if there is a risk of suspending the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Government with KazMunayGaz in 2013, the minister replied: “Risks exist all the time. Romania is a country open to investments and treats all investors without discrimination and the Ministry of Energy will continue to do so. It is not for the first time that a leading company in the energy sector is subject to investigation, with potential extremely complicated consequences. But this did not make Romania become a less appropriate environment for investment and for business in the energy field. Romania is a state of law. On the other hand, it is normal for us to defend our interests, as I am convinced that investors do the same.”
