EUR 200m European investments in Sighişoara-Coşlariu railway

More than EUR 200 million from the Cohesion Fund, from the 2014-2020 financial year, will be invested in the second phase of the project on the modernization of the railway connection between Sighişoara (Mureş County) and Coşlariu (Alba County), the European Commission informs.

“Financing projects to improve rail links in Romania are an investment in the real economy of the region, as it will bring direct benefits to the local business environment but also to tourism, while reducing transport time and promoting green mobility. This project will directly contribute to improving the quality of life of Romanians,” Corina Cretu, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, said.

This section is part of the railway route connecting the city of Braşov to the border with Hungary, part of the Corridor Rhine – Danube of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

After rehabilitating nearly 100 km of rail, the trains will be able to travel at speeds of 120-160 km/h, and the travel time between the two localities will be reduced by half.

The Sighişoara-Coşlariu railway line crosses the Mureş, Sibiu and Alba counties, and this EU-funded project, estimated to be completed in 2018, will bring benefits to one million inhabitants in the area.
