The US currency has peaked to a new historic high on Friday at the central bank’s exchange rate of RON 4.2523, following successive growths in the past days.
The EUR is quoted at RON 4.5145, whereas the CHF is quoted at 4.2182.
BNR adviser Adrian Vasilescu said on Friday the most favourable situation for the US is to depreciate the currency, in order to simulate exports.
On the other hand, the Chair of the Fiscal Council Ionut Dumitru has said Romanians should expect price increases.
“After the more moderate speech of the president-elect, investors expect policies favourable to economic growth and, consequently, the increases of interest rates in the US will take place faster that initially anticipated, meaning a stronger USD. There’s no way to predict if the USD will reach the level of EUR or how much will it strengthen further. It becomes obvious the USD is stronger. This evolution involves higher costs in terms of gas and oil imports for Romania. Otherwise, in terms of trade relations, we don’t depend too much on the US currency,” Ionut Dumitru said.
