Romanians buy products online worth RON 5.2m daily

Romanians have bought online products worth more than RON 1.9 billion through PayU Romania during April 2016 – March 2017, up by 61% against the same period last year, according to a company release.

“In the past financial year the online payments in the PayU system had the best evolution in the past 12 years. More and more Romanians choose to buy online, the average value of the shopping basket is about RON 255. The payment by card remains the preferred method for Romanians and the payment in instalments is becoming more and more popular, cumulating 16% of the total transactions. The largest online transaction was made with a card registered in Hungary and was worth RON 145,700,” said Marius Costin, PayU Romania Country Manager.

In 2017, the largest transaction was recorded in January and had a value of over RON 107,000.

According to the communiqué, the IT&C products remain on top of the preferences of online purchases. Approximately 33% of the total value of online transactions aimed products in this category.

“Black Friday remains the event that attracts most online buyers, last year 867,000 transactions were conducted in November. It is followed by March, the month of women, with 818,000 transactions and by Christmas, with over 785,000 transactions,” Marius Costin said.

During April 2016-March 2017, online stores in Romania registered over 230,000 orders from 200 countries, transactions processed by PayU. The top three countries with the highest orders are: Hungary, Bulgaria and the UK. Their value exceeded RON 47.8 million.
