Unemployment rate – 4.1% in Q1 2019

The unemployment rate in the first quarter of this year was 4.1%, the same as in the previous quarter, the National Statistics Institute (INS) informs on Thursday.

By gender, the gap between the two unemployment rates was 1.1 percentage points (4.6% for men versus 3.5% for women), and by residential areas 0.7 percentage points (4.5% in rural areas compared to 3.8% in urban areas).

By age group, the unemployment rate reached the highest level (15.6%) among young people (15-24 years).

According to the INS data, in the first quarter of 2019, the employment rate of the population aged 20-64 was 69.2%, by 0.8 percentage points lower as compared to the national target of 70% set in the context of the Europe Strategy 2020.

In contrast, the employment rate of the working age population (15-64 years) was 64.2% in the first quarter of 2019, down by 0.3 percentage points against the previous year. The employment rate was higher for men (72.4% vs. 55.7% for women) and for urban people (65.8% vs. 62.1% in rural areas).

The employment rate of young people (15-24 years) was 23% during the mentioned interval.

Romania’s active population was 8,852 million in Q1, of which 8,488 million were employed and 364,000 were unemployed.
