Unemployment rate – 4.7pc in Q4 2017

The unemployment rate in the fourth quarter of last year was 4.7%, the same as in the Q3. The highest unemployment rate of 21.2% was reached among young people aged between 15 and 24, the National Statistics Institute informs on Wednesday.

By gender, the gap between the two unemployment rates was 0.9 percentage points (5.1% for men versus 4.2% for women), and by residential areas it was also of 0.9 percentage points (5.2% in rural areas against 4.3% in urban areas), capital.ro informs.

On the other hand, the employment rate of the working age population (15-64 years) was 63.4%, by 1.9 percentage points below the value recorded in the previous quarter. The employment rate of young people (15-24 years) was of 22.9%. The employment rate of the population aged 20-64 years was of 68.4%, by 1.6 percentage points below the national target of 70% set in the context of the Europe Strategy 2020.

The employment rate was higher for men (71.8% as compared to 54.8% for women) and for urban people (65% vs. 61.5% in rural areas).

In Q4 last year, Romania’s active population was of 8.966 million people, of which 8.541 million were employed and 425,000 were unemployed.
