Update: Bucharest Airports Director resigns, half year after appointment. Traian Panait takes over as interim chief

The National Airports Company Bucharest (CNAB) has announced on Thursday that Director General Dan-Dumitru Baciu has resigned.

“Resignation is a common thing when there is a gap between the expectations and what can be done,” said Dan-Dumitru Baciu.

He had been appointed in office on February 12, after his predecessor, Bogdan Mandrescu, had also resigned, ziare.com informs.

Later on Thursday, Traian Panait has been appointed by the CNAB Board as interim Director General for 4 months.

Panait, 64, graduated the Transports Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute in Bucharest and had management positions with the Transport Ministry. During 2002-2004, Traian Panait was State Secretary with the Public Works, Transports and Housing Ministry on issues of transportation.

In February this year, the Ministry of Transport made public, with great delay, the results of checks that its Control Body had conducted during 2013-2017 at Otopeni Airport, part of CNAB. During these inspections, the ministry specialists discovered, among others, that:

– many employees, including from the management, had cashed hundreds of thousands of RON without being entitled to;

– some of the employees did not come to work (for example, an employee only worked 112 minutes in a year and a half);

– during 2016 – August 2017, the CNAB has made only 0.03% and 0.16% of the investments in the airport infrastructure, although for each year of the mentioned period the amounts for investment were between RON 201 million and RON 267 million.

In spite of ziare.com requests, the Ministry of Transport refused to disclose what measures were adopted in this case.
