Orange Business has released the new Business Internet Security 2023 report, providing a detailed overview of cybersecurity challenges in the past year in the context of technological revolutions such as generative AI. In its sixth edition, the new report offers information on the most common cyber attacks encountered in the local market to industry experts and the business community alike, along with predictions for 2024 and concrete solutions provided by Orange Business for the protection of companies and public administrations.
Distribution of attacks across business verticals in Romania
According to the report compiled by Orange Business experts, who analyzed over 11 million identified threats monthly through the Business Internet Security service, a constant increase in the number of cyber attacks has been observed. Data analysis for this year showed that the energy sector was the most affected, accounting for 31% of total attacks, followed by transportation with over 22%, the governmental and public services sector with 19%, retail with 19.7%, and healthcare with over 10%.
Types of cyber threats and their distribution by regions
2023 has been a year dominated by ransomware, continuing the trend from previous years, characterized by a growing number of attacks affecting numerous companies and resulting in losses totaling tens of billions of USD. Analyzed data revealed that ransomware attacks continue to spread through traditional vectors such as emails, social networks, and downloading files from insecure sources, as well as through new methods such as browser-initiated attacks. In a ranking of the most widespread attack types, ransomware takes the lead with over 34%, followed by phishing at 31% for the third consecutive year, while DDoS attacks rank third, accounting for 27% of total incidents.
In terms of distribution at the national level, most attacks targeted the Bucharest region, comprising almost 40% of all threats, followed by the Southeast region with 27.13%, and the Banat region with 16.27%. Thus, Bucharest is in the lead, with an average of 980,000 prevented attacks each month, followed by Constanța with an average of 670,000 attacks per month, while Timișoara ranks third with nearly 340,000 detected and blocked threats each month.
