Orange denies new cyberattack, says leaked data is from February

Orange Romania issued new clarifications on Wednesday, stressing that “there is no evidence that a new attack or compromise of the company’s systems has taken place” after the hacker group Babuk claimed to have extracted a massive amount of data in a new attack.

After a rigorous analysis, our cybersecurity experts confirm that the data presented by the alleged attacker is the same as in the February 23 incident,” the company said on Wednesday.

“We reiterate that we have not received any ransom demand and that this is a re-release of already exfiltrated data. Following the previous incident, we have implemented enhanced security measures and the affected customers, partners and employees have been notified or are in the process of being notified. The incident has been reported to the competent authorities and we are working closely with the National Cyber Security Directorate. We are committed to protecting our customers’ data and ensuring transparency in communication. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates, if necessary,” Orange Romania also said on Wednesday.

A day ago, Orange Romania officials claimed, in a reaction to HotNews.ro, that “up to this point” they had not received any negotiation requests from the Babuk hackers who claim to have extracted 4.5 TB of personal data, which is a large amount of data. Both Orange and the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC) experts also said that “they analyzed the published file samples, and the indicated link refers to the same archives extracted in the recent cyber attack on Orange Romania,” the company and DNSC said on Tuesday.
