OMV Petrom has started construction works on the production unit for sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and diesel from renewable sources (HVO) at Petrobrazi, an investment of 750 million euros and a capacity of 250,000 tons per year, from 2028.
Petrom posted a video on its social media page with the symbolic moment of the start of construction, which was attended by the company’s management.
The new facility will allow OMV Petrom to integrate SAF and HVO production with the existing fuel production, storage and distribution infrastructure, thus meeting the region’s sustainable mobility needs. Of the total investment of EUR 750 million, EUR 560 million is for the construction of the SAF-HVO facility, and EUR 190 million for two green hydrogen production facilities.
SAF and HVO are sustainable fuels produced by processing renewable raw materials, such as waste vegetable oils and animal fats. Through advanced refining processes, using green hydrogen, these materials are transformed to have characteristics similar to conventional kerosene and diesel.
The use of these fuels allows a significant reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels (for example, by at least 65% in the case of SAF and HVO). The flexibility of the new installation allows the adjustment of the type of raw materials used (waste oil, animal fats) and the mix of finished products (SAF and HVO, as well as bio-diesel and bio-LPG), depending on market requirements and the availability of raw materials.
In parallel with the development of sustainable fuel production, OMV Petrom is expanding the charging network for electric vehicles, aiming for over 5,000 points by 2030 in Romania, compared to approximately 900 currently in place.
OMV Petrom is the largest integrated energy producer in South-Eastern Europe, with an annual group-wide oil and gas production of approximately 40 million boe in 2024. The Group has a refining capacity of 4.5 million tons per year and operates an 860 MW high-efficiency natural gas power plant. On the retail petroleum products distribution market, the Group is present in Romania and neighboring countries through approximately 780 gas stations, under two brands – OMV and Petrom.
OMV Petrom is a company in which, at the end of 2024, Romanian shareholders hold over 43% of the shares (of which the Romanian state, through the Ministry of Energy, holds 20.7%, and 22.5% are held by Romanian pension funds, to which are added almost 500,000 individual investors and other Romanian entities). OMV Aktiengesellschaft, one of the largest listed industrial companies in Austria, owns 51.2% of OMV Petrom shares, while the remaining 5.6% are held by other foreign investors. Of the total OMV Petrom shares, 28.1% are freely traded on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.
