In December 2023, the price of store-bought pizza and quiche in the EU was, on average, 5.9% higher than in December 2022, says the latest Eurostat report release on February 9 when the National Pizza Day is celebrated.
Looking back to December 2022, the average stood 15.9% higher than in December 2021. This indicates a slower rate of inflation of the price of pizzas and quiches in 2023.
Among the EU countries, the highest annual inflation for pizza and quiche in December 2023 was recorded in Hungary (+13.4%), followed by Luxembourg (+11.3%) and Latvia (+10.6%).
On the other end of the scale, in the Netherlands, a decline of -0.9% was registered, while small increases were recorded in Denmark (+0.6%) and Belgium (+1.0%).
In the case of Romania, pizza prices were 6.5% higher in December 2023, compared to December 2022, after a 15.9% advance recorded between December 2021 and December 2022.
Romania ranks second in the world in terms of the number of pizza orders and first place in South-Eastern Europe, with most being delivered in the Capital, where more pizza is still ordered than in Rome or Barcelona.
The top of the cities with the most pizza lovers is completed by Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Constanta, Oradea and Brașov, while the title for the biggest fan of the well-known dish goes to a user from Iași, who, during 2023, ordered 569 pizzas, surpassing the previous year’s record. Also, the most expensive order, worth 3,958 lei, was placed last year by a user from Constanța.
In terms of tastes, Romanians remain faithful to the traditional assortments, the most ordered types of pizza being Diavola, Quattro Stagioni, Quatro Formaggi, Margherita and Capriciosa.
