Car registrations in Romania grew by 74.7 percent in the first four months of this year, compared to the same period in 2016, to 196,183 units, the Directorate for Driving Licenses and Vehicle Registration (DRPCIV) data reveal.
The registrations, dominated by second-hand cars from abroad, accelerated strongly compared to last year, a clear effect of eliminating the environmental stamp as of February 1.
Thus, new passenger car registrations in Romania grew by 22.3 percent in the first four months, year-on-year, to 28,916 units. At the same time, in January-April period, 167,267 second-hand cars were registered in Romania, up 88.6 percent compared to the first four months of 2016, according to DRPCIV data.
85 percent of the cars registered in the first four months were used, and at every new car registered in Romania, six other second-hand cars were registered.
In April, 6,640 new cars were registered, up by 7.5 percent compared to April 2016, and 39,144 second-hand cars, 63.2 percent more than in the fourth month of last year.
In 2016, 396,538 cars were registered in Romania, up 19.4 percent compared to 2015, a year in which 332,223 units were registered.
