The retail trade turnover (excluding trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) decreased in January 2018, as compared to the previous month, both as gross series by 25.3% and as series adjusted by number of working days and seasonality by 0.9%, the National Statistics Institute (INS) has informed on Monday.
As compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the turnover volume of retail trade (excluding trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased, both as gross series and as series adjusted by number of working days and seasonality, by 11.1% and 11.4%, respectively.
In January, the volume of retail trade turnover (excluding trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles), as gross series, decreased, against the previous month, as a result of the decrease of non-food sales (-29.5%), sales of foodstuff, beverages and tobacco (-24.7%) and the retail trade of automotive fuel in specialized stores (-17.7%).
As adjusted series, the turnover decreased as a result of the decrease in sales of non-food products (-1.8%), the retail trade of automotive fuel in specialized stores (-1.2%) and sales of food, beverages and tobacco (-0.1%).
Compared to the same month of 2017, the volume of retail trade turnover (excluding trade of motor vehicles and motorcycles) as gross series, increased as a result of increases in sales of non-food products (+16.7%), trade retail of automotive fuel in specialized stores (+8%) and sales of food, beverages and tobacco (+7.5%).

Volume of retail trade down by 0.1% in both euro area and EU28 In January 2018 compared with December 2017, the seasonally adjusted volume of retail trade decreased by 0.1% in both the euro area (EA19) and in the EU28, according to estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In December 2017, the retail trade volume fell by 1.0% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the EU28.
In January 2018 compared with January 2017, the calendar adjusted retail sales index increased by 2.3% in the euro area and by 2.7% in the EU28.
Annual comparison by retail sector and by Member State
The 2.3% increase in the volume of retail trade in the euro area in January 2018, compared with January 2017, is due to rises of 3.8% for non-food products, of 0.8% for “Food, drinks and tobacco” and of 0.2% for automotive fuel.
In the EU28, the 2.7% increase in retail trade volume is due to rises of 4.2% for non-food products, of 1.7% for automotive fuel and of 0.6% for “Food, drinks and tobacco”.
Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases in the total retail trade volume were registered in Romania (+11.0%), Hungary (+7.5%), Latvia (+7.2%) and France (+6.3%), while decreases were observed in Estonia (-0.9%) and Belgium (-0.2%).
