Romania, closer to regain the title of Europe’s granary: record wheat exports in 2013-2014

Romania exported 5.059 million tons of wheat in 2013-2014, an increase of 81 percent compared to 2012/2013, when exports amounted to 2.787 million tons. This is the highest level in five years, according to National Institute of Statistics (INS) report on the supply balances for the main food products.

More precisely, the total resources of wheat during the production use period, 2013-2014 respectively, were 8.196 million tons, out of which the usable output totaled 7.296 million tons, while imports accounted 900,400 tons.

According to INS analysis, in 2013-2014 both wheat resources / product and imports peaked in the analyzed period, respectively from 2008-2009 until 2013-2014 years.

Domestic consumption of wheat totaled 4.588 million tons in 2013-2014 reference year, up by 11 percent compared to the previous year, of which human consumption was 3.494 million tons, more than 11 percent over 2012-2013, but down against 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 when human consumption amounted 3.593 million tons, 3.556 million tons respectively.

However, Romania has exported in 2014 agri-food products counting for EUR 5.409 billion, by EUR 311.5 million more than in the previous year (+6.1 percent), while its imports, accounting for EUR 4.895 billion have grew slower, exceeding by 2.6 percent the value of 2013, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) data show.

The European Union was the main agricultural partner of Romania in its agri-trade on 2014, the deliveries of agrifoodstuffs to this destination accounting for 61 percent (58.4 percent in 2013).
