Romania exits top 5 European corn producers

Domestic grain production in 2016-2017 increased by 3.4 percent compared to the previous year, Romania ranking 6th among the European Members, while in terms of cultivated area, the country ranks 5th, according to the 2016 edition of the ‘Agriculture, forestry and fisheries’ statistical book, published by Eurostat, the statistical office of the  European Union.

Regarding the wheat production, Romania will register a growth of over 10 percent, maintaining on the fifth place.

Out of the 56.9 million hectares of grain cultivated in Europe, 1 percent below the average of the past five years and by 0.6 percent below the previous marketing year, Romania has cultivated an area of 5.2 million hectares, according to the European Commission.

Thus, Romania is the fifth largest grower of cereals in the EU by area, after France (9.6 million hectares), Poland (7.8 million hectares), Germany (6.4 million hectares) and Spain (6.1 million hectares).

Latest Eurostat estimates on the situation of agricultural crops in 2016-2017 indicate a a new high production of wheat in the EU, most of which is of the highest quality. Also, Europe is likely to be the largest barley exporter in the world, due to record output.

In 2015, Romania has cultivated cereals for grains on a total area of almost 8.2 million hectares and reported a production of about 19.2 million tonnes, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data.
