Romania, good perspectives to become the main rape producer of Black Sea

Agriculture could record in 2016, the best results in the last decade, a total business of RON 24.5 billion, due to the favorable spring weather, investments, consumption recovery and price trends, a analysis of Dekalb, part of Monsanto, reveals.

Figures show that the local wheat market in 2016-2017 will be the fifth consecutive season in terms of increasing the productivity of wheat and fourth consecutive wheat harvest exceeding the threshold of about 7 million tons.

A record production is also expected in the rapeseed segment of 1.3 million tons, up by 35 percent compared to the volume harvested the previous season, Romania becoming the main rape producer of Black Sea.

According to Romanian Commodities Exchange estimates, agricultural production prices will stay this year at EUR 150-160 / tone for wheat, EUR 150-155 / tone for maize and over EUR 380-390 / tone for rape.

This evolution is encouraging given that in the past three years, the price of wheat has decreased by 25 percent and of maize’s by 15-17 percent.

Besides the financial perspectives of Romanian agriculture, the analysis shows that the degree of agricultural land fragmentation continues to be a challenge for the development of this sector.
