Romania Sees 4th Largest Drop in EV Registrations in the EU

The EU new car market fell by 6% last year, with Romania experiencing the biggest percentage decline, of almost a third, according to ACEA data for Europe. In Romania, however, hybrid cars performed well, as did diesel cars (which grew by 15%). 1.44 million new fully electric cars (EV) were registered in Europe last year, a 6% decrease compared to 2024.
The largest market, Germany, fell by 27%, to 380,000 units, and the second largest market, France, fell by 2.6%, according to ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers Association) data.

The main reason for the decline in full-electric cars is the reduction (or even elimination in some countries) of government subsidies for the purchase of such cars. In Romania, the decrease was 32%, from over 14,000 to under 10,000.

Several small markets had decreases of over 20% in full-electric cars, but there were also countries with significant increases: Belgium (37%), the Netherlands (16%), Spain (11%), Hungary (47%). Among non-EU countries, two excel in electric cars: the United Kingdom, with 381,000 last year (an increase of 21%) and Norway (114,000, an increase of 9%).

In total, 10.6 million new cars (petrol, electric, hybrid, diesel, LPG) were registered in the EU in 2024.
