Romanian agri-food products trade, back on deficit. Exports stood at EUR 5.7 bn in 2015

Romania exported last year over 15 million tons of agri-food products worth EUR 5.73 billion, up 4.6 percent/volume and 6 percent in terms of value compared with 2014.

But, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development data, the country went back on deficit, after two years of reporting surplus in international trade with food products, as the imports were slightly higher in 2015 than the previous year.

The agri-food imports were 8.5 million tons, worth EUR 5.82 billion, exceeding by almost 2.4 million the amount of 6 million tons imported in 2014 and by 19 percent the amount of EUR 4.89 billion recorded in 2014.

In this context, Romania’s agri-food products deficit totaled EUR 89.02 million. Corn is the product that has brought the highest grossing from intra and extra trade, by almost EUR 960 million for 5.1 million tons, followed by cigars, cigarillos and cigarettes (51,659 tons), worth EUR 917.49 million.

On the other hand, Romania is still the “champion” at fresh pork meat imports, given that last year were brought 188,689 tons from EU and third markets, worth EUR 295.7 million.

In 2015, the European Union was Romania’s main partner in agri-food trade, while the supply of agricultural products to this destination had a share value of 65 percent, while the purchases from EU Member States account for 81 percent.
