Romania’s corn production could fall by 4 pc this year due to heat

Romania’s corn production is expected to fall by 4 percent this year due to the warmer-than-normal air temperatures which dominated the country this mid-July in west and southwest , UkrAgroConsult’s “Black Sea Grain & Oil” report shows.

This could happen even if the cultivated area was higher compared to last year.

The estimated production and average productivity will be in line with the average recorded in Romania over the past five years, UkrAgroConsult said.

”The increased air temperatures were unfavorable for growth of spring crops and provoked soil moisture evaporation. Corn plants are at the milky ripeness stage, locally at the beginning of waxy ripeness. Sunflower crops are waxy- or fully ripe. Farmers have started sunseed harvesting in the south,” the report also reads.

Romania has the largest corn area cultivated in the EU, but is the second largest corn producer after France.

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) reported that the drought is evolving in the west and southwest of the country because rain can not compensate for the extremely high temperatures. Lack of rainfall and extreme temperatures will persist in these regions in August and September.

UkrAgroConsult analysts expect the exports in the 2017-2018 season to be higher despite a downward revision of corn production forecasts.
