Tarom Director Designate refuses to take office

Tarom national flag carrier has been lacking leadership for over a week, after Madalina Mezei had been sacked from the director general position and the manager designate, Valentin Gvinda had refused to take office.

Gvinda, who would have been the fifth Tarom manager in the past year, has informed the company’s managing board that he is refusing the offer.

The Romanian state airline has been on loss for 11 years, reporting a loss of almost RON 183 million last year. The last year on profit for Tarom was 2007.

Madalina Mezei was dismissed on October 15. After the dismissal, she accused that the Transport minister, Social Democrat Razvan Cuc had asked her to hold the planes on the ground on the censure motion day, meaning to block the TAROM domestic flights from flying from various cities in Romania to Bucharest so that MPs who live in the country could not get to the Parliament and vote the motion.

The National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA) has started an investigation in this case, with Mezei being called for hearings today, as a witness. “The only statement is that I am absolutely convinced the truth will come out. I am telling to DNA to tell the truth”, Mezei told journalists before entering the DNA HQs.
