Wizz Air welcomed today its state-of-the-art Airbus A321neo aircraft, which will serve the newly established base at Bucharest Băneasa – Aurel Vlaicu International Airport. With its second base in the capital inaugurated today and an additional aircraft set to operate from Bucharest Otopeni starting August 1, these operational developments aim to significantly enhance connectivity between Romania and other destinations across Europe and beyond.
Nearly 913,000 seats have been added to the airline’s 2025 summer schedule in Bucharest, marking a 22% increase compared to the same period last year.
Today, April 1, Wizz Air officially launched its base operations at Bucharest Băneasa. In addition to the existing flights to Naples (Italy), Krakow (Poland), Abu Dhabi (UAE), Budapest (Hungary), and London Luton (UK), the airline will introduce two new routes from Bucharest Băneasa to Poland: Warsaw on June 8 and Wroclaw on December 6. Tickets are already on sale on wizzair.com and the airline’s mobile app, with prices starting from 248 RON.
Expanding Operations at Bucharest Otopeni
Additionally, a new aircraft based at Bucharest Otopeni will start serving three new routes this summer:
-
Gran Canaria (Spain) – from June 17
-
Frankfurt Hahn (Germany) – from August 1
-
Friedrichshafen (Germany) – from August 2
Tickets start at €29.99. The airline will also increase the frequency of nine existing routes, including Dortmund, Memmingen, Stuttgart, Nice, Basel, Madrid, Málaga, Lyon, and Pisa.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Bucharest Băneasa base, Mauro Peneda, Managing Director of Wizz Air Malta, stated:
“With a 51% market share in Romania, we are excited to expand our network and launch a new base at Bucharest Băneasa today. This summer, we are proud to add nearly 913,000 additional seats, marking a 22% capacity growth in Bucharest compared to last year. This is the first step toward reaching an annual capacity of over 8 million seats. Operating 67 routes to 22 countries from both Bucharest airports, we continue to grow as part of our ‘WIZZ 500’ strategy, supporting the Romanian economy and local job market while strengthening our leadership in the country.”
Peneda also said that flying last year from Baneasa airport was a test for the airline and that they wanted first to check the cost efficiency and after that there was the decision to relocate several flights to Bucharest’s second airport.
The Wizz Air official added that the Romanians’ most favourite routine destination so far is Germany, with Italy, Turkey coming closely. Peneda also announced that Wizz Air is seeing the potential of Brasov and that it’s in talks with the local authorities for their presence there as well.
Since beginning operations in Romania in 2006, Wizz Air has steadily increased its investment, recognizing Romania as a key market. The airline currently operates 173 routes from 13 airports across the country, connecting passengers to 71 destinations in 22 countries. Over the past 18 years, Wizz Air has established seven operational bases in Bucharest Băneasa, Bucharest Otopeni, Cluj-Napoca, Iași, Timișoara, Craiova, and Sibiu, employing over 1,500 people in Romania.
