Former leader of ALDE senators, Daniel Zamfir, will join the PSD Group in the Senate, in order to preserve his seat in the Economic Committee. However, he remains ALDE member, according to political sources.
ALDE group in the Senate has been disbanded after ALDE had quit the ruling coalition and several senators had left Tariceanu’s party to join PSD.
ALDE leader, Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, has announced that they had filed a request for a new parliamentary mixed group to be established in the upper chamber of the Parliament, as three Pro Romanian members, Adrian Ţuţuianu, Vasile Ilea and Nicolae Marin had joined ALDE group. The want this new mixed group to be named “Democracy”.
ALDE has been walking on thin ice lately after breaking up from PSD, as several members opposed the party’s decision and decided to remain in the Dancila Government, being thus ousted from ALDE. It is the case of Teodor Meleşcanu, Graţiela Gavrilescu, Alexandru Băişanu and Ion Cupă.
All four ousted members announced they will challenge the exclusion in court. Former FM Teodor Melescanu, who took Tariceanu’s seat as Senate Speaker, has harshly criticised his former party boss, saying that Călin Popescu Tăriceanu “is just a desperate shadow, a man scared by tomorrow”. Melescanu added he will not pay attention anymore to “an expired politician and to its petty clique”.
Moreover, ALDE has also seen several of its local branches dissolved. For instance, ALDE organisation from Dolj has sent an open letter to Călin Popescu Tăriceanu, asking him to annul the decision to dissolve the branch and to sack Daniel Chitoiu. The Dolj organisation accused Tariceanu of “choosing bargaining over Liberalism”.
