PSD has ALDE’s support for suspending President Klaus Iohannis, if the head of state continues to refuse to apply the Constitutional Court’s decision to dismiss DNA chief prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi. The announcement was made by Călin Popescu Tăriceanu Sunday evening for Romania TV private broadcaster.
The only thing that makes it difficult to start the proceedings is the parliamentary holiday and, implicitly, the lack of votes, the Senate Speaker pointed out.
In fact, the ALDE leader is on holiday, and he has delegated his speaker duties to Senator Adrian Ţuţuianu.
PSD chairman Liviu Dragnea had scheduled a coalition sitting on Monday on the suspension of the head of state, sitting that has been cancelled.
“Before leaving, on Friday, I had a discussion with Liviu Dragnea on this topic and my answer is very clear. I will support a coalition decision to start or to initiate the suspension procedure. Unfortunately, there are no intermediate instruments in Romania to sanction the irregularities, slippages of the President of Romania. There is only one weapon that is devastating, namely the suspension, and that is why I have in the past expressed my reluctance in this regard. At this point, it seems that there are not enough votes to initiate this process, as many MPs are already on holiday and I do not think now is a good moment,” Tariceanu said.
