The AUR, S.O.S. România and POT parties, led by George Simion, Diana Șoșoacă and Anamaria Gavrilă, have challenged at the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) the draft laws adopted by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate through which Romania could shoot down drones that have illegally entered the country’s airspace, the USR announced on Monday.
In a message published on Facebook, Elena Lasconi and the USR describe the decision to challenge the law at the CCR as outrageous.
“While Europe is openly discussing strengthening the defense of the EU and Ukraine and how we can protect ourselves in the face of an increasingly clear Russian threat, something incredible is happening in Romania: AUR, SOS and POT have attacked at the CCR the laws that allow the Romanian Army to shoot down Russian drones that have been violating our airspace for months,” according to the message published by USR.
“How to block measures that would have protected innocent people standing at the border? How to sabotage Romania’s ability to respond to a real threat?” asks the party led by Elena Lasconi. USR claims that AUR, S.O.S. Romania and POT “are not fighting for Romania, but against it.”
“At a critical moment, when our European allies are strengthening their defense, they choose to leave our country vulnerable. Romania needs solidarity, security and responsibility. Our European future and the safety of our families cannot be jeopardized by populism and manipulation. Dear Romanians, do not let yourself be fooled by these parties and their leaders! Open your eyes”, the USR message also states.
On the press communication groups of AUR, S.O.S. Romania and POT, journalists asked for the reasons why they decided to attack the law at the CCR. AUR and S.O.S. Romania had not sent any response by the time of publication of this news. POT representatives told journalists to ask for the motivation from the party led by Diana Șoșoacă, because “they submitted the documents”.
The Chamber of Deputies adopted the law on February 19 that allows the army to shoot down drones that enter the country’s airspace, as well as the law on the peacetime conduct of military missions in the country. The law was later adopted by the Senate on February 26. The law was then to be promulgated by interim President Ilie Bolojan.
The Chamber of Deputies plenary voted with 196 votes in favor, 99 against and 2 abstentions, the draft law on the control of the use of national airspace, which allows the shooting down of drones in Romanian airspace. PSD, PNL, USR, UDMR and deputies from the minority group voted in favor of the project. AUR, SOS and POT voted against, and the two abstentions came from deputies not affiliated with any parliamentary group, according to information available on the Chamber of Deputies website regarding the vote.
