Bill: Mayors could lose their mandate if refuse to carry the national flag

Defense Minister Mircea Dusa tabled a bill stipulating that any mayor will lose his mandate if he refuses to carry the national flag or to wear the tricolor scarf at receptions, public ceremonies or at civil marriage celebrations.

DefMin explained that the refuse to carry the national flag is sanctioned with fine worth RON 2,500 to 5,000, but the measure is not enough. Therefore, he proposed the mayor should lose his mandate. The draft has been tabled on October 19 and is in public consulting procedure at the Chamber of Deputies.

Another bill tabled by a group of PSD and UNPR MPs early this month stipulates the contempt for the national insignia should be punished with 1 year to 3 years in prison.

In early September, the Interior Ministry asked Covasna prefect to check on the law compliance and to order sanctions after some war veterans claimed they hadn’t been allowed to carry the national flag on the building of Sfantu Gheorghe City Hall. The veterans had been manifesting in front of the city hall on the occasion of celebration of 71 years since the town had been released from foreign occupation during the WWII.
