Bogdan Aurescu, appointed as Romania’s new FM

Prime Minister Victor Ponta has reconsidered his nomination of Mihnea Motoc as Foreign Minister (FM) and has instead proposed Bogdan Aurescu, State Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for this position.

According to a press release from the Presidential Administration, President Traian B?sescu on Monday signed the decree noting the resignation of Teodor Mele?canu from the FM position and taking act of the cessation of his duties as a member of the Government. President Traian B?sescu also signed on Monday the decree appointing Bogdan Aurescu as Minister of Foreign Affairs. The proposal for appointing Aurescu as FM was submitted by Ponta shortly after he returned to Bucharest from the United Arab Emirates.

Last week, President B?sescu said that, in order not to be in the state of incompatibility, Mihnea Motoc must be dismissed from the post of ambassador to the EU. He explained that this decree of dismissal must be countersigned by the Prime Minister.

Mihnea Motoc was nominated for the post of Foreign Minister after Teodor Mele?canu resigned from this position just a week after he had replaced Titus Corl??ean, due to the row related to the Diaspora vote at the presidential elections.
