Bucharest District 3 mayor Robert Negoita to run for PSD presidency

Bucharest Social Democrat leader Robert Negoita, also District 3 mayor, on Tuesday announced he would run for the party’s chairman position at the upcoming extraordinary congress scheduled in October.

“It’s a crucial moment for PSD, the biggest party in Romania, which is ruling, has the prime minister, yet it is in a delicate situation.

The premier had the first hearing in a lawsuit yesterday, the interim president is convicted in the first court, and we have elections in several days. I think more responsibility is needed. People expect maturity from us. PSD has always proven it (…) Those having determination, courage and desire to help to get out of deadlock are visible only in hard times. We cannot afford risking actions or options. Subsequently, I am decided to run for the PSD chairman position at the elections of October 11,” Robert Negoita stated.

He said he informed the interim leader Liviu Dragnea about his intention to run.

“He doesn’t mind, we are colleagues, we respect each other and the competition is only stimulating it. I have a very good relationship with Liviu Dragnea, I respect him for all he has done. He did not announced his intention to run, I did it,” the Social Democrat leader added.

Robert Negoita, a young entrepreneur, joined the Social Democrat Party in 2004 and has made his way through politics since then, winning a term as district mayor at the previous local elections in 2012.

According to Capital magazine, he ranks among first 300 Romanian millionaires. He is also shareholder at Dinamo football club in Bucharest.
