Călin Georgescu went on Monday, accompanied by his lawyer, to the first hearing in the case opened at the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ) in which he requests the annulment of the BEC decision by which the institution implemented the CCR decision to annul the elections. The hearing began at 12:00, and upon leaving the ÎCCJ, Călin Georgescu’s lawyer, Marina Alexandru, said that the judges remained in their ruling.
“We are waiting for the result, let’s see what the High Court’s solution will be on exceptions,” said the lawyer.
“The law needs to be law for everyone and respect the will of the Romanian people. We need to return to the initial phase, where we started from,” added Călin Georgescu.
Marina Alexandru said that Georgescu challenged the “BEC decisions” because “the Romanian Constitution was flagrantly violated, no one can be above the law.”
“An absolutely incredible situation has been created and we are practically in a coup d’état situation. You asked if he is still running (ed. note: Călin Georgescu). Note that Mr. Călin Georgescu is a candidate and is qualified and validated by the CCR decision 31 of December 2, 2024, published in the Official Gazette. We have two qualified and validated candidates for the second round of the election,” said Georgescu’s lawyer. “The immediate measure that needs to be taken is to resume the second round and enter into legality because there was an attack on the institutional order,” she said.
Călin Georgescu said that he had notified “all international bodies” about the cancellation of the presidential elections in Romania and that “we will have a response from them.”
“What is happening today in Romania may be a very dangerous precedent throughout the world. Therefore, I continue to hope and hope with the Romanian people that the law will be law,” Georgescu added.
The main object of the file refers to the annulment of the decision of the Electoral Bureau, respectively the decisions of the BEC, which refer to the annulment of the entire electoral process and the resumption of the presidential elections from scratch, based on the decision of the Constitutional Court. In the ÎCCJ file, opened on December 13, Călin Georgescu and the Coalition for the Defense of the Rule of Law appear as challengers and Adrian Ionuț Ghica and Denes Kovacs appear as petitioners. The other parties to the file are: the Central Electoral Bureau, National Defense Ministry, the Chief of Staff, the government represented by the PM, the Prosecutor’s Office upon the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the Constitutional Court of Romania, the President of Romania, Klaus Iohannis, the Romanian Intelligence Service, Elena Lasconi (his contender in the annulled presidential run-offs).
