The Central Electoral Bureau rejected Diana Şoşoacă’s candidacy on Saturday. The reasons given during the BEC meeting referred to the CCR’s decision last year. The president of S.O.S. Romania had submitted her candidacy on Thursday, when she came to the BEC headquarters with boxing gloves, saying that she came to “fight the system”.
On October 6, 2024, the CCR rejected Diana Şoşoacă’s candidacy in last year’s presidential elections, which were completely annulled.
One of the reasons for rejecting the candidacy invoked by the judges of the Constitutional Court last year was that Diana Iovanovici-Şoşoacă “urges to change the democratic foundations of the state and to violate the constitutional order.”
SOS Romania President Diana Șoșoacă went to the headquarters of the Constitutional Court of Romania on Monday, dressed in black, with a wreath of flowers and candles, before the hearing in which the appeal she filed against the BEC’s decision to reject her presidential candidacy is discussed.
Șoșoacă asked to participate in the CCR judges’ meeting, but was refused. In response, the senator began singing a religious hymn “Veșnica pomenire/Memory Eternal” right in front of the institution, accusing the BEC decision of representing the “funeral of democracy” in Romania.
The SOS president launched a new attack on the judges of the Constitutional Court, calling them “criminals of the Romanian constitution” and accusing them of executing democracy.
At the same time, Șoșoacă announced that she would request international support and referred to leaders Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, to whom she addressed open letters, asking for their help. “I will request international help, I think it is better for them to appoint us president,” the senator declared.
Although she tried to draw the attention of the press to her protest, the journalists present chose to ignore the event and did not broadcast the demonstration live.
Șoșoacă had previously organized a press conference, but the attendance was low, with many journalists refusing to cover the event in protest of the senator’s repeated attacks on the press.
“Isn’t your job to present absolutely all the news? You are the watchdog of democracy. Unfortunately, just as democracy died, so did the dog. We are in mourning,” Șoșoacă said.
The funeral wreath, on which the message “Democracy was executed” was written, was left near the Legislative Council in Parliament.
